FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is clinical supervision?

Clinical supervision is a professional relationship where counsellors reflect on their client work, ethical decision-making, and professional development. It is a required part of ethical practice for trainees and qualified practitioners.

Yes. If you are in training and seeing clients on placement, supervision is a mandatory requirement from most training providers and professional bodies such as the BACP or NCPS.

Yes. Supervision is currently offered primarily online across the UK, making it accessible wherever you are. However, in-person sessions are available at my office in Newark on Trent.

Sessions are a structured but reflective space where you can bring client work, ethical questions, emotional responses, and professional challenges. Most of all, you can be authentic and yourself.

We may explore:

  • Client material
  • Risk and safeguarding concerns
  • Ethical dilemmas
  • Your emotional and relational responses
  • The development of your clinical thinking

The frequency of supervision will depend on your training requirements, professional accreditation and caseload. If you’re a trainee, your training provider will usually specify the minimum requirements. We can discuss what is appropriate for you when we first talk.

Yes. I work with both trainee counsellors and qualified practitioners who want reflective, ethical, and relational supervision.
You can contact me via the enquiry form on the website. We will then arrange an initial conversation to explore fit, availability, and your supervision needs.

No. Supervision isn’t only for when something has gone wrong. It is an opportunity to reflect on your work, develop your thinking and continue growing as a practitioner.

You don’t need to arrive with a problem. Sometimes the most useful supervision begins with curiosity.

Yes. Supervision is a safe, confidential and professional space.

As with counselling, there are limits to confidentiality where safeguarding or serious professional concerns require action.

Yes. Counsellors sometimes change supervisors for a better fit, different perspective, or developmental reasons. If you are considering this, we can discuss it openly and ethically.

That’s okay. You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly prepared agenda. Sometimes we start with what’s been on your mind, and see where the thinking takes us.

Supervision should be a place where you can be honest about uncertainty, mistakes and things you are finding difficult. My role isn’t to judge you, but to help you think carefully about your practice and professional responsibilities.

Absolutely. Choosing a supervisor is about finding the right fit. We can have an initial conversation about your training or practice, what you’re looking for and whether ThinkDuncan feels right for you.

You many have lots of questions about developing yourself.

Being a counsellor can be lonely at times. Whether you want to discuss your client work, your own thoughts and position, or how best to develop yourself and your practice, supervision with ThinkDuncan will give you the space and enthusiasm to master your potential.
